One hundred years ago, in 1914, the community foundation concept was born in the Midwest, giving rise to a new philanthropy, a new way of participating in community, and a new vision for the future.
Today, the Community Foundation of Dunn County is one of more than 700 community foundations in the United States, collectively managing more than $48 billion in assets and making grants of approximately $4.5 billion a year to improve life in their communities. There are more than 1,700 community foundations worldwide.

Community Foundations Around the Globe
Community Foundations around the globe operate under the same guiding principles as your community foundation. We all:
- serve all those living in a defined geographic community
- provide grants for nonprofit organizations and community-based activity, addressing a wide variety of needs in the community
- provide services that help donors – individuals, families, corporations, other foundations, public bodies – fulfill their vision for the community
- encourage a wide variety of donors to meet local needs
- seek to build a permanent resource for the community (most often through the creation of endowed or permanent funds)
- engage in a broad range of community leadership and partnership activities, serving as catalysts, conveners and facilitators
