MHS Alumni Scholarship

The Alumni Association has been awarded annually since 1914 to one boy and one girl in the senior class at Menomonie High School. These awards are made by the Menomonie High School Alumni Association as a token of accomplishment in both scholarship and extra-curricular activities. Personal traits of character such as: leadership and honesty, together with other qualities which seem to indicate that the award winner will be a credit to the Association and to the High School are often determining factors in the final decision of the award committee.

Credit for the establishment of the awards is due largely to the efforts of Dr. Anfin Egdahl, President of the Association in 1913-1914. It was his idea that the award winners would serve as a bond between the Alumni and the undergraduate body of the high school. The committee through which Dr. Edgahl worked in the selection of a Practical Basis of Award was composed of Mrs. Ada Hosford, Mrs. Daisy Thompson, and Mr. Richard Puhl.

Originally based to a large degree, upon the qualifications for the Rhodes Scholarships, the award requirements were modified somewhat at the annual meeting in 1936. The Association feels that it is within its right in withholding the award at any time if in the opinion of the award committee there are no candidates in the graduating class who measure up to the high school requirements of the award. The award committee is composed of (4) alumni and (3) faculty members.

Basis for the award are:

  • One boy in the top 10 overall boys in the senior class, based on scholastic averages, through their entire high school work.
  • One girl in the top 10 overall girls in the senior class, based on scholastic averages, through their entire high school work.
  • Only seniors who have been in attendance at MHS for a full two years prior to graduation are eligible for this award.
  • Requirements are based on the following criteria for selection:
    • Character/Leadership – 50%
    • Likely to be a credit to the Association/High School – 30%
    • Extra-curricular Activities – 20%

The award has traditionally been a “medal” that is awarded to the recipient, along with a small monetary scholarship, that is collected solely through donations from former MHS Alumni. Consider this award a lasting connection to your school and community – so that in the future, you may have an opportunity to “give back” in some way to your school and community the way you have while a student at Menomonie!
