Fifteen new Lifetime card tables were purchased for the Shirley Doane Senior Center in Menomonie through a Foundation grant written by Shari Homstad, previous Director of the Center. This awarded grant was able to replace a number of older card tables that had been in very poor shape.  The grant was awarded in March 2011 and the tables were purchased that same month. The Senior Center currently has over 1,000 members and receives roughly 150-200 guests every day, many of whom visit the center to use the tables for cards and other activities. Shari Homstad says “the tables have brought countless hours of pleasure to seniors at the Shirley Doane Senior Center!”
The center hosts a number of different card groups including cribbage, 500, Mah Jongg, several bridge groups and a penuckle group will start up in June of this year. Current Director for the center, Donna Collins states that about 120-150 total individuals make up at least 10 different card groups and they meet 1-2 times every week at the center. While the tables are primarily used by these card groups, they are also used for other events or activities within the center. Senior members at the center say they look forward to their card group meetings each week and are pleased with the new tables.
The Center’s mission is to help residents engage in meaningful community service activities. You can read more about the center at their official website: http://menomonieseniorcenter.org/
