In the fall of 2008, Barbara Gort, project coordinator of Grassroots Community Organization, wrote and received a grant to the Community Foundation of Dunn County to assist a city-wide project to create an off leash dog park in Menomonie for canines.  The city of Menomonie approved for use, eleven and a half acres for the first ever off-leash dog park.  This massive project gained the support of the entire community, raising over $15,000 in a combined effort.  The City of Menomonie, which approved the use of land, also offered $30,000 in matching funds. DogParkPath

In a city where dogs are banned from all public parks, even on a leash, having this space available was crucial for both dogs and their humans.  One of the great features of this park is the 0.4 walking path around the perimeter.  The path was installed to encourage dog owners to walk around the park to get exercise and socialize with other community members, while their pets play.  The path is very flat all the way around that is welcoming to all types of walkers old and young alike.

The park is located just past and behind the Dunn County Humane Society on Brickyard Road.  The location of the park is highly beneficial for the Humane Society, as dogs that are well socialized have the opportunity to visit the park for daily exercise.  The Humane Society reports the park has increased the flow of traffic to their facility since its opening in 2009.DogParkMainPhoto

The Menomonie Off-Leash Dog Park is open from sunrise to sunset every day and requires either a daily or annual pass to use the park.  Daily passes a $4 at the park or $20 for an annual pass which can be purchased through the city treasurer’s office.DogPark2
